Weekly Classes

One of KUM’s earliest activities was the organisation of weekly self-improvement classes for community members. Initially, these talks were held on Friday nights at individual’s houses, with generous hosts rotating through the community. As numbers increased, various community halls were rented to accommodate growing needs. Alhamdulillah, since the acquisition of the KUM Centre in 2017, we finally have a facility to call our own and conduct these classes.

Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, KUM have adapted and now conduct our classes utilizing Zoom. This has allowed KUM to access speakers outside of Australia and participation has been encouraging with a high level of participation.

In addition to these talks which are open to everyone, there are also a number of smaller classes that we run specifically for brothers and sisters:

Madrasah

Madrasah Al Muhajirin is run by the Muhajiroon Community Development Association, Inc. and fully managed and conducted by parent and youth volunteers from the community. It has been run continuously since May 2006.

The Madrasah operates every Sunday from 10am to 2pm during the Victorian school term for children aged 6 – 16 years of age. Classes are focused on three key areas:

1. Islamic knowledge and practices

2. Skills in Quran recitation, memorisation and understanding

3. Essential life skills

The above is delivered through a structured syllabus that has been designed utilising high quality textbooks and teaching materials. All materials are screened by the teaching staff to ensure that they are aligned with authentic Islamic values.

A key focus of our teaching staff is instilling good manners amongst (‘adab’) students and interactions both within the school and society as a whole. This is particularly important to the Malay community and authentic Islamic teachings. We achieve through a combination of positive reinforcement and the requirement of all staff to display excellent ‘adab’ at all times.

LOTE

A group of Malay teachers and professionals formally established the Malay LOTE (Language Other Than English) programme in Victoria in 2016. This enables students within the Victorian school system to select Malay as a LOTE option for their studies.

We have set up classes with Victorian School of Languages at three language centres namely, Roxburgh College (North), Suzanne Cory High School (West) and Dandenong High School (Southeast) for Foundation to Year 10 students.

We hope to launch VCE Malay in the near future after we have established the Malay LOTE programme here. Please visit our facebook site at LOTE Malay Language VIC for further details.
